Hours and minutes vs decimal hours
The most common mistake in a hand-built timesheet is treating 8:30 as 8.30 hours. It is 8.5. Minutes are sixtieths, not hundredths, so every part-hour has to be divided by 60 before it goes anywhere near a pay rate. Over a week of half-hour overruns that error is worth real money, in either direction.
A quick reference: 15 minutes is 0.25, 20 minutes is 0.33, 30 minutes is 0.5, 40 minutes is 0.67 and 45 minutes is 0.75. This calculator shows both forms so you never have to convert by hand.
Unpaid breaks
Breaks are the other place totals drift. Whether a break is paid depends on your jurisdiction and contract, and short rest breaks are often treated differently from a meal break. Enter only the minutes that are genuinely unpaid — the calculator subtracts them from that day before totalling the week.

How do I calculate hours worked?

How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60. So 30 minutes is 0.5 hours and 45 minutes is 0.75 hours. Payroll systems usually want decimal hours, which is why this calculator shows both.
Does this handle overnight shifts?
Yes. If the clock-out time is earlier than the clock-in time, the shift is treated as running past midnight into the next day rather than returning zero.
How is overtime worked out?
Hours above the weekly threshold you set are counted as overtime and paid at your multiplier. Overtime law varies by country, state and contract, so set the threshold and multiplier to match your own rules.
